Hi Dr Doris Ang,

My sincere apologies for not sending the feedback sooner. I'm truly sorry.

Bernadette finds learning easier with the filters. I can see a dramatic change in all aspects.
She doesn't skip lines anymore when she plays the piano. She used to stop at every few bars and would be 'lost' and I would have to point at every note throughout the whole piece. She's more eager to practise and try new pieces now.
Her comprehension and reading has improved too. She used to hate reading b'cos of frequent headaches
. Now, I can finally stop giving her Panadol!!
Nowadays, she can finish all her assignments accurately and quickly especially Math.(She used to make alot of unnecessary mistakes).
She says it's such a relief when the printed words, numbers and music notes are not fuzzy or moving.  I can see a renewed confidence and a challenging spirit to excel in school. She studies hard for the coming final exams.
She can't stop talking about her filters to everyone she meets: friends, tuition teachers, catechism teachers and even our priest. Best of all, she's happier and more confident. She looks kinda geeky, she says, but then, "Who cares?" she reassured herself!

Once again, my sincere apologies for the delay. Also, we're deeply grateful for your generosity and kindness for making it possible. We can't thank you enough. A million thanks!!!

Adeline

Dr. Ang,

We would like to express our extreme gratitude to you for the help that you have given us in the understanding of Trent’s condition. We cannot thank you enough for giving our child a chance of being able to live life the way it was intended. It is heart wrenching for us to know that he does see things in the same way that we do, but at the same time we are extremely thankful that there are people like you to give us hope; you are truly a God send.

He was so excited...  The place I brought him to here to get the frames, when I took the filters out of the envelope the man working there said, those are Irlen's filters!!!!!!  He has another patient that he has recommended see you and they did and came back to him for the frames....  So you ARE known here in KL.  I told him I had some books and he asked me to bring a couple of him as well.  So I will drop them off to him tomorrow.

I have a meeting next week with the school on changes they are going to make to his schedule to help him at school....  We have decided to keep a diary of things he has seen with his new glasses.  So far today, he says being outside it such a delight!  His eyes don't feel like crying in the sun.  He had no idea what the mountains were he could see through his bed room window.  He went upstairs with our oldest son and told him to please pick him up so he could look outside...  When he did, he screamed, we have mountains outside of our window... and the trees don't look like big green globs anymore....  He had his nightly reading homework, which OH MY GOD... sent me to tears... He read so well.  Much better than before and also told me all the words were well behaved!  (He said they all stayed right where they were meant to be!)....

Thank you very much again for your assistance, and please accept our blessings of the New Year, and many more to come. Thank you very much.

Marcus, MariAnne, and Trent (Bugg) Vondenstein

Dear Dr. Ang,

Thank you for prescribing the lenses for my children, Darren and Vanessa, which had helped tremendously in their school work and reading. They are now much happier and more confident about things in their daily activities. You have brought hope and happiness back to them. With your support, you have given the kids confidence and trust. Finally, I had seen the smiles on their faces after so many years.

It was a relief after finding out their conditions as I had struggled for years to help them academically and emotionally.  All these years, they had suffered mentally and physically as they have lost their self esteem and confidence.

Vanessa is more focused on her learning and studies her school work with the lens prescribed. She is much happier and motivated to do his work without much "threatening" unlike before she was diagnosed with his problem.  Previously, she would look tired, angry, depress, fearful and sleepy whenever she is doing her homework. It was always frustrating and feeling lost for her because she just could not sit for long and concentrate to complete a piece of work.  She refuse to try new food always said it do not look good but recently she ask for new variety of food as everything looks appealing to her. Her appetite changed. As for her reading I used to force her to read but now I have to force her to stop.

As for Darren, he read only comics but not story books and now he is actually spending more time on reading these days without asking.  How wonderful! I am so happy! In the past, he always complained that he has headache and pain in the eyes, normally after school or after long hours of reading. However, after wearing Irlen lens, he hardly complains the above symptoms.  They have many curious friends asking them about wearing ‘sunglasses’ in school.  They felt that they looked cool in their new pair of glasses. Their friends also want to borrow their glasses to wear because they feel cool wearing them.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone in your clinic who changed my children’s lives!

Warmest regards,

Christine Koek

I cannot begin to describe the hardships I had to overcome throughout my academic journey before I received treatment at the Irlen Dyslexia Clinic.

Having no prior knowledge of dyslexia, I assumed the distortions I saw in words as myopia at first, which explains my frequent visits to the optometrist before I was finally convinced that my eye sight had not deteriorated.

This led to my second assumption - everyone must see the same thing. If everyone could deal with the splitting texts and the moving words except me, then I must be inadequate. However, I was determined to perform well and not disappoint my mother and hence started the gruelling practice of copying the content of the various textbooks on to either coloured paper or using coloured ink. I do not know why I chose to do that, except that I seem to remember things better and that my eyes don't hurt as much.

It doesn't sound much, copying the textbook in Primary school, but at Secondary level, I had nine subject textbooks to copy and finally at University level, I had 10 modules, three textbooks each not including reference texts.

When my hands begin to blister and the pain became too excruciating to bear, I would shove it into a bucket of ice I had placed next to my study table in order to numb the pain and continue copying again and again, year after year.

Did I think there had to be something wrong that I had to resort to such extreme measures in order to remember what I have studied? Yes. I thought I was stupid. Everyone else just needed to read from the textbook and would be able to understand - everyone but me.

The other thing that Irlen Syndrome had caused me were the painful headaches that I suffered daily. Sometimes the pain would become so prominent that I would not be able to focus on anything else.

The headaches, together with the distortions I had to overcome made school a very trying experience.

After treatment by the Irlen Method, the improvements were amazing. Since wearing the Irlen Spectral Filters for the past four months, my daily headaches have ceased. I no longer skip words or lines and the text on the page have stopped splitting up. Do I still make mistakes? Of course. I understand that these lenses are not magic and that I still have to work on my difficulties. However, without the painful headaches and the distortions, I am definitely in a better position to improve myself.

That day, I could not stop texting Clinical Director Dr Doris Ang, telling her how overwhelmed with happiness I feel to know that I am not inadequate - it was only Irlen Syndrome.

Hi Dr Doris Ang,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for yr kind assistant with my 2 kids Belinda and Hugo.

This term I start to see the improvement in Hugo's results......no doubts his report book is not out yet. He told me for the subject Maths he had score top three in his class under the MCQ questions.  I am very happy.  Before seeing you, he kept telling me and teachers that the words on the page fly off and reading is really painful for him....he used to rub his eyes, complain that words get blurry and sometimes fading off.  He often complained of eyes tearing and headache. No one understands him and this poor boy has been suffering in silence and we as parents are helpless.  We are glad that at last he managed to get treatment but is also painful to realise that the missed treatment has cost him many lost years.  I personally feel that awareness talk should be given to school teachers and Special Needs Officers and Counsellors should be trained to identify this problem so that early intervention can take place.

As for Belinda, with yr help she has improve in her school project and was select by ITE to attach for a study trip in Canada for 3 weeks.

With yr blessing Dr Doris Ang, my 2 kids are much happier than before.  I am very thankful to you.

I wish to thank you for helping us and when u needs my testimony, Hugo, Belinda and myself will gladly testify so that other children can be helped too.

Thank you

Dionna Yip

Besides being diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome in October 2008, Cheen Da, 12 was diagnosed with ADHD since 8.

Before his diagnosis of Irlen Syndrome, he was really struggling with his school work and some behavioral issues.

He was always getting into verbal and even physical fights with his friends on the slightest provocation.  We had problems managing him at home too.

As his mother, and also his main care giver; his behavioral issues were my main concerns while his academic issues follow closely behind.  We would always get into shouting matches and I would cane him.  I even have had suicidal thoughts as I always felt guilty that it’s my fault that he is what he is today.

I have had to take urgent leave several times to go to school whenever he got into trouble.  After serious considerations, I decided to care for him full time, I have a younger son who’s 5 years younger and he has started imitating his elder brother’s behavior.  Now I have another issue to face.  It was really stressful.  I knew that more problems will surface as I have resigned at a time when my husband was retrenched and have yet to find a job.

As it takes time for him to adjust to the glasses, he developed other problems in April 2008, he was not able to express his feelings of stress.  He had an indifferent teacher. He was hearing voices and even talked to himself in class,

I was not aware till one day he got into serious trouble with some female classmates.  This teacher then raised the alarm to me.  I was very angry and upset.

We met another Psychiatrist, Dr Simon Siew (private practice) who offered to see him immediately ( CGC goes strictly by appointment) when he heard of my predicament by chance.  Cheen Da was prescribed some medications and he recovered over time.

Luckily, in school he had 2 emphatic Vice Principals who supported and us in many ways.  He had wonderful teachers too who never got tired of my frequent calls and visits to the school either to update them on his latest progress or my queries on how he is behaving in school and how to help him in his school work.  They have given me many valuable tips and also counseled him on numerous occasions.   When I approached them to inform them of Cheen Da’s diagnosis of Irlen Syndrome and the need to wear the tinted glasses, they were very receptive  made all the necessary administrative work to inform all teaching staff.  He had a very supportive School Counselor too.

We also had a wonderful Psychiatrist, Dr Ong Say How of CGC whom we visit 3 monthly.  He has been managing Cheen Da’s ADHD since end 2004.

With medication and the prescribed Irlen glasses, he passed his PSLE with an aggregate score of 199!

He used to just pass his MT or even failed at times from Primary 3 all the way to Primary 6.  He scored an A for his MT in the recent PSLE and Bs for the other 3 subjects.   His aggregate score was 199.  He was so overwhelmed that he cried (his classmates thought that he had failed). As his parents, we were taken by surprise too.

We still have his behavioral issues especially now that he’s going on to be a teenager and entering Secondary School.

We have decided to let him try for Express course since he was given an option to select Express or Normal Academic.

Last week, we received a letter from MOE informing us that he has been awarded the Good Progress Award.  I told him that this award is only for the top 10 % of the school cohort

He was very happy and more confident.  He is looking forward to the new school term.

She has literally speaking “cured” Cheen Da of one his hurdles to learning effectively and his confidence level has really gone up.

Dr Ang not only carries out her professional duties, she also counseled us and assisted us in so many ways that words of thank you aren’t enough to show our gratitude to her.

Thank you Dr Ang!

Regards
